Does one actually need a skin care routine? And what should it be like? How to create a routine for skin health and when to change it? Let's break it down.
I’m often asked by clients, beauty enthusiasts, journalists, and even family about how to build a proper skincare routine. Interestingly, when I started working as an aesthetic doctor nearly 30 years ago, we didn’t talk about skincare routines as a concept. We simply discussed skin care and how to find the best protocol for each individual. Today, the term routine is everywhere, and while I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with it, I do appreciate what it stands for — consistency.
Skincare only works if you apply it regularly. Using products once a week or sporadically won’t bring results. That’s why the idea of a routine is helpful — it reminds us to be consistent. However, I dislike the idea that a routine is rigid and unchangeable. Life is full of changes, and so should your skincare be. Your routine should be flexible and adaptable to different seasons, environments, and life stages.
For example, if you live in a place with cold winters, your skincare in winter will differ from summer. Stressful periods, holidays, or changes in your skin’s condition also call for adjustments. The key is to follow some basic rules and understand how your skin works.
Having educated skincare practitioners in over 40 countries, I’ve seen how routines vary globally. For instance, Korean skincare ritual often involves nine or ten steps, focusing on layering water-soluble products. This approach is very different from European skincare traditions, which tend to be simpler. Both can be effective if followed consistently and suited to the individual’s needs.
Many people feel embarrassed when they visit a beauty salon for the first time because they don’t have a routine or don’t know where to start. But honestly, starting from scratch is a great opportunity. It’s often easier to build a routine when you don’t have a shelf full of products to sort through!
If you’re new to skincare, start with the basics — cleansing.
Cleansing is the foundation of any routine. Our skin is exposed to pollution, toxins, and dead skin cells that accumulate daily. Cleansing twice a day — morning and evening — helps remove these impurities and supports healthy skin renewal.
Gone are the days of harsh soaps and alkaline cleansers that damage the skin’s barrier. Today, gentle cleansers with a pH close to the skin’s natural acidity protect your skin’s barrier and support the beneficial microbiome living on your skin. This helps maintain moisture and prevents irritation.
Moisturising typically becomes important in your 20s. If you have oily skin, look for lightweight moisturisers that regulate sebum production — best used in the morning. For dry skin, night creams with water-binding ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera are essential because skin loses more moisture overnight.
In your 30s, consider adding eye care products to protect the delicate skin around your eyes. In your mid-30s to 40s, neck creams become important for the same reasons. By your 40s and beyond, active serums targeting wrinkles, brightening products for pigmentation, and intensive moisturizers can be added.
Remember, your routine will grow with you but doesn’t have to be complicated. Consistency is key, and a few minutes a day can make a big difference — just like brushing your teeth.
