Antioxidants have become a buzzword in skincare, but what do they actually do for your skin, and how should you use them? Let’s break down the science, the myths, and the practical steps for building antioxidant protection into your daily routine.

What Are Antioxidants and Why Do We Need Them?

Antioxidants are molecules that prevent oxidation, protecting essential substances in our skin from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules — think of them as tiny troublemakers with open arms, always looking to interact and damage whatever they touch. Antioxidants neutralise these free radicals, preventing them from harming skin cells, DNA, and other structures.

But here’s the catch: not all free radicals are bad. Our bodies naturally produce them to help clean up cellular waste. The key is balance—having enough antioxidants to neutralize excess free radicals, but not so many that we interfere with normal skin processes.

Where Do Antioxidants Come From?

Our skin’s antioxidant protection comes from two main sources:

  • Natural antioxidants produced by the body, such as glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and the well-known vitamin C.
  • Dietary antioxidants from foods rich in vitamins and plant compounds.

As we age, our natural antioxidant levels decline, making external support more important. Factors like sun exposure, pollution, smoking, stress, and even certain diets (high in sugar, red meat, and processed foods) can increase free radical activity and oxidative stress on the skin.

How Do You Know If You Need Antioxidant Skincare?

Signs that your skin may benefit from extra antioxidant support include:

  • Increased sensitivity to the sun, frequent sunburns.
  • Damaged or dry skin barrier.
  • Formation of wrinkles or loss of elasticity.
  • Living in a polluted environment, experiencing high stress, or unhealthy lifestyle.

People with fair skin, those using photosensitising medication, and anyone with inflammatory skin condition (like acne or rosacea) are at a higher risk of antioxidant depletion.

Choosing the Right Antioxidants for Your Skin

Not all antioxidants are created equal, and their effectiveness depends on how they’re delivered to the skin. Vitamin C is a popular choice, but it’s fragile and not always well absorbed topically unless you’re deficient. Vitamin E (specifically alpha-tocopherol) is a potent fat-soluble antioxidant, best delivered in creams and oils.

Other effective antioxidants include:

  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): boosts collagen, protects against oxidative stress, and brightens skin.
  • Resveratrol: found in red grape, it rejuvenates and protects ageing skin.
  • Green tea extract (epigallocatechin): Calms inflammation and protects sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Look for serums and creams that combine several antioxidants for synergistic protection.

Building an Antioxidant Skincare Routine

A minimal and effective routine includes:

  1. Gentle, microbiome-friendly cleanser.
  2. Water-soluble antioxidant serum (tailored to your skin’s needs).
  3. Moisturiser enriched with fat-soluble antioxidants like vitamin E or coenzyme Q10.

Don’t forget sunscreen — ideally with added antioxidants for extra protection.

Supporting Skin from Within

Colourful, plant-rich diet is your best internal defence. Aim for a variety of fruits and vegetables daily, healthy oils (like olive oil), and moderate amounts of coffee, tea, red wine, and dark chocolate. Supplements like vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta carotene can help if you’re exposed to high UV or have specific needs, but a healthy diet and lifestyle are foundational.

Bottom Line

Antioxidants are essential for skin health, but more isn’t always better. Focus on balance, choose products with proven ingredients, and support your skin both inside and out for optimal protection against free radical damage.
